Church's Chicken

I've been craving fried chicken for weeks. I was like "Dad, if I do this, you have to reward me with FRIED CHICKEN tomorrow!!" And he agreed ;)

Hey, if you want me to do something, bribe me with food. Food is the only thing that gets me up in the morning. I go to school thinking about all the yummy food I'll get to eat after class ;)

My dad wanted to go to KFC, but since Church's was closer - we came here instead!! We got takeout, so when we got home, we laid out our chicken on the counter - and started digging in!! :D

My dad put on some classical music in the background and he was like "We're so classy - eating fried chicken & listening to Chopin." you're so funny dad. -.0

My dad popped open a diet coke with "Dad" on it, and I drank some hipster dandelion(!) soda.

A few bites in, my dad was like "Wow, this is so salty! Did they bathe this chicken in salt water or something? I only taste salt!!" That, I had to agree with. I like Church's chicken better (it's juicier) but the seasoning really needs some work. As for KFC, their chicken is a bit dry, but I do like their 11 spices recipe that they coat on the batter.

Dandelion & Burdock Soda

3.5/5 stars

Churches doesn't sell this - I wish they would though ;)
I actually got this from the Fish Counter a while back, and only drank it today!! It had a really nice, floral taste, and you could definitely get hits of the burdock in the background. Nice and bubbly, and a nice change from your regular ol' coke or sprite! :D

"Pure Chicken Happiness"``
Who wouldn't be happy with a box of fried chicken? ;)

10 piece Box O Chicken + Fries + Gravy $20
Original/Spicy

2.5/5 stars

Not as good as I remembered it. Or maybe my standards have changed. Has my palette become more refined? ;) The skin was deliciously crispy and crunchy but the dominant flavour was the salt. Not a whole lot going on. The skin was reasonably juicy and the oiliness prevented it from tasting dry. I was planning on eating 4 pieces but in the end I only downed two, because after a few bites I started feeling queasy :P

The original is okay - I prefer the spicy version. It's more flavourful - but it's not spicy. At all. (And that's coming from someone with a low tolerance for spicy food)

Crinkle Cut Fries

1.5/5 stars

I'm not a huge fan of crinkle cut or stubby fries. The only fries I really enjoy are long & crispy ones ;D  These fries were just okay, they weren't very crispy and didn't taste very potatoey. They also weren't seasoned very well so these are definitely made for dipping in the gravy!!

 Gravy
1.5/5 stars

Tastes exactly how you would expect - like cubed gravy! Not that's there's anything wrong with that ;D It's salty, gloppy, with a mild gravy flavour. Nice to dip your fries in!!

  1. Very nice review! I had never heard of this place before, but then again, I live in Montreal! :) I do like KFC but don't eat it often; however, when I am in the mood for fried chicken that is where I head to. The fries in your photo don't look very appealing at all. Thank you so much for sharing, and I am dad you and your dad got to have a meal together over classical music. :)

    1. Hi Linda!! :)

Yay glad you liked it!! KFC is pretty good when I'm in need of a quick fried chicken fix! :D
The fries weren't that great haha, I prefer crispier fries!!

My dad and I had such a fun time eating fried chicken and bonding over chopin!! Nothing like some fried chicken to bring people together :D

Thanks so much reading Linda!! Hope you had a great day filled with lots of yummy food!! :D

  2. I would agree, Selina ! There was a time when Church's was the clear winner of the two dominant chains in town, but it seems to me they've been sliding down over the past few years. The chicken is still moist ('tho smaller it seems) but greasy, salty and one-dimensional tasting. Not to mention the prices have skyrocketed.

Coincidentally, a month ago I was going to a family picnic at a park and I was rushed for time, so on my way there I was brainstorming what to pick up to contribute to the picnic. Well I drove by a KFC and I was like "bingo !" so I stopped and went in to check out what they offered. I also remembered (just in time) they have online coupons so I pulled out my phone and checked, and voila, they do. I got the 18-piece (9 regular, 9 spicy) with fries and choice of two salads (I got two coleslaws because I like coleslaws) for $29, not a bad value at all. Well I later ate 3 pieces and they were delish, definitely much better than I ever remembered KFC to be, and this time even better than Church's. I was very pleased. When I got home I was curious if Church's has online coupons, and it turns out they do, but their deals aren't nearly as good so I think I made the right choice even if spontaneously.

From now on it's the Colonel all the way for me !

    1. I agree, Church's has definitely declined in quality/flavour!! The prices get me sometimes, I don't like paying so much for fast food haha. But I agree, KFC does have better combos than Churches!!

Wow 18 pieces of chicken + fries + 2 salads for $29 is a really good deal!! I actually haven't had KFC in ages!! Based on your comments I better make a trip to visit the ol' Colonel soon! ;)

    3. I've had sushi with Classical piano music before - at Sushi Boss and Sushi Karis. It did feel special to me in a way, and coincidentally, both of these restaurants are on my favourites list. I swear it's not something that I rate a restaurant by though!

  6. A new-to-me secret …… go to Church’s Chicken Canada site on your smartphone, go to their coupons section, scroll to whatever meals or combos takes your fancy, take screenshots of them and leave the pics in your phone’s photo album. Then just go to Church’s and show them the pics as coupons.

The 3-pieces + small fries for $4.90 does the job for me …. it ain’t LA Chicken but it’s also only $5
