Hi Genki - Visit #3!

Hi Genki is one of our go to Japanese restos in South Burnaby - it just never disappoints!! I think this is probably the third time I've blogged about Hi Genki LOL!! Sorry guys - I just love it that much, and I feel the need to share it with you all! ;)

Read my first post about them here: http://www.vancitynoms.com/2014/06/hi-genki-awesome-japanese-food-in.html
And my second post: http://www.vancitynoms.com/2015/04/hi-genki.html

And yes...I used the same storefront photo each time!! (I'm lazy okay)

This was actually our first time going for lunch haha, the past few times we've always gone for dinner! This time I discovered something new - there's actually a mini Japanese grocery store next to Hi Genki!! It's super tiny and cute - and stocked with a ton of imported snacks and grocery items from Japan!! So after our meal my dad and I went exploring - and we bought some NATTO!! hehehe. I just love that stuff. I love how it smells...and the slime factor of course ;)  My dad is really into natto too - he ate it all the time when he was student back in Japan! :D

I remembered Rachel (www.momentswithrae.blogspot.com) recommended that we try out their bento boxes, so we did!! Hi Rachel if you're reading this lol!! You guys should totally check out her blog btw, it's supa cute - her pictures are seriously always on point!
She does restaurants reviews too and she posts amazing (drool worthy) recipes!! :D

Every time we've gone we've tried ordering their genki bento boxes, but they were always out!! But this time we got lucky and we finally got our hands on one!! Since my dad is really into bento boxes, I let him have it, and I got the sake curry instead! :D

Wow - this is really good deal for $2.50!! It's only for takeout though haha.

I loveee how their daily specials is handwritten! And that person's handwriting is just :D
I'm such a font geek ;)

A picture that I accidentally took that actually turned out pretty cool LOL!! Don't you just love it when that happens? :D

Genki Box
Bento: 4/5 stars
Tempura: 2/5 stars

This got my dad's approval haha!! Oh so simple, but oh so good. I gave the tempura a separate rating because it was the only thing we were disappointed by. The breading was a bit too thick and heavy, and it wasn't airy enough. But everything else was really yummy! The sashimi was fresh and the teriyaki chicken was tender and flavourful - we only wished that there was more!

Here's a closeup! (Because I'm indecisive and can't decide which picture looks better LOL!) Closeup or further way? Blogger problems.

Sake Curry (5 pieces of salmon)
Breaded Fried Salmon w/ Curry on Rice

4/5 stars
Wow...this thing was HUGE. And I mean huge. Seriously, it doesn't look like much in the picture, but there was 5 huge pieces of salmon underneath the first piece! My dad was pretty impressed (and he's really hard to impress.) I was like (jokingly) "I'm pretty good at ordering eh?" and he nodded in total agreement LOL!

The salmon itself was lightly breaded and really flavourful - flaky on the outside, and tender on the inside. The curry itself tastes like your basic japanese curry - but that's why I love it - it's simple comfort food, nothing fancy!! It was loaded with potatoes though and there was a ton of rice - it even came with a salad + half an egg on the side!

    1. You're welcome!! Just spreading the blogger love!! ^^
hehe how awesome is the curry?! Definitely my kind of comfort food :D

There's definitely a consistency issue going with the tempura, it might depend on who's making it that day! - or maybe they just tweaked their recipe! :D
