Shanghai Wonderful Restaurant

For Thanksgiving dinner this year, instead of having turkey, we had Shanghainese food!! Which is totally fine...because what sane person would turn down XLB and fatty pork?! ;)

I vividly remember my dad chose Denny's for our thanksgiving meal last year because he wanted turkey (bonus points if you remember that blog post!)

I took advantage of the fact that it was a holiday and ordered their cherry pork heheh. And to my surprise, my dad didn't even complain that it was $19! (Don't you just love holidays?)

We did manage to finish most of the food, in the end we only packed up 2 shen jian baos! My dad was quite impressed with the food, he was like "This place is way better than Dinesty, you can tell they actually put thought into their food." I have to agree. Dinesty feels and *tastes* more massed produced (being a chain and all) but I still like them! My dad on the other hand, isn't a fan ;D

The servers were really nice!! When I told them about my allergies, they were friendly and assured me that they would omit the ingredients I'm allergic to!

I forgot my phone on the table and as we were about to drive off, the waiter ran up to our car and handed me my phone!! Bless his heart :D

Cherry Pork $18.95

4.5/5 stars

How can anyone dislike fatty pork?! This was awesome!! It's different from your typical Chinese/Cantonese/Taiwanese dong bo rou! For one, it's red (hence the name cherry!) The pork was super rich and melt in your mouth tender!! The lean parts were super tender and not tough at all! The entire dish was really flavourful without being overwhelmingly so. I also loved how they included veggies, so we didn't have to a order a separate veggie dish!

MMM FAT!!!

Shanghai Smoked Fish $7.95

4/5 stars

This was a really good version of shanghai smoked fish! The smoky flavour was quite strong, and the fish was soft and didn't have any bones! It had a mild sweetish flavour which was balanced by some saltiness!

Duck with Brown Sauce $7.95
4/5 stars

"Brown sauce" sounds really boring, but it was actually amazingly yummy! The brown sauce, tasted like a mixture of spices, wine, and soy sauce, but it didn't overwhelm the natural flavour of the duck! This was an appetizer and it was served cold!

Shen Jin Bao (Pan Fried Buns) $5.95

3.5/5 stars

My dad really liked these! These were on the smaller side, but they were still pretty good! The skin was soft and not too thick, and the bottom was evenly pan fried. Like the XLB, the filling was juicy and flavourful!

XLB $5.95

3.5/5 stars

The xlb was pretty good! Flavour wise, really yummy!! The skin was reasonably thin (but not DTF thin) and the pork filling was juicy and moist! The juice was flavourful and very porky! There was so much juice that all the juice squirted onto my lap!

The interior is quite nice!! It was completely packed on a sunday!

  1. Shanghai Wonderful used to be my favourite Shanghai restaurant until they closed down to relocate. I'm glad the food at the new location is good too! The new location also looks much prettier than the old one. No more running out of ideas for places to eat in Richmond!

And LOL leaving your phone behind and having XLB juice squirt onto your lap... sounds like you weren't having the best day =S

  2. Oh man. The restaurant that used to be at that location used to have the WORST old white people food. I forget what it was called though. My grandma took us all for New Year's Day dinner one time. Can't say I'm sad to hear that it's been replaced.

    2. Well I don't want to sound age-condescending, FW, but back in the '90s there was a place called The Ivy on W.4th around Collingwood that was supposedly "fine dining" and known for their steaks. Friends of ours suggested they take us there for a "nice quiet meal" (my alarm bells went off). Well we walked in the door and ALL I saw were seniors with blue hair. To this day I'd joke about that experience to my wife, impersonating Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense, saying: "I see old people."

    4. Yes! The Highlander! Horrible memories...

For some reason whenever I hear someone describe a place as nice and quiet and full of old people, I always assume the steaks will be overcooked. I'm not really sure why that is. I suppose it's probably because all my grandparents order steak well done, and are horrified when I tell them that beef tartare is one of my favorite things in the entire world.

All I know is that if I was a cow, I would be very sad to be cooked well done.

    5. haha my grandparents are like that too!! They refuse to eat anything raw (raw vegetables, sushi, raw meat.) They were horrified when they saw me eating sushi!! ;D

LOLOL "If I was a cow, I would be very sad to be cooked well done."
