Sushi Nanaimo

The other day I was on a mission: on a mission to find (and eat) the BIGGEST KATSU IN TOWN!! My (google) search brought me to none other than...Sushi Nanaimo!

Channeling my inner Raymond, I proceeded to order 3 dishes, to which the waitress responded: "Is that all for here, or to go?"

"Oh, for here."

Why do I always get asked that? ;)

When the katsu arrived, it was indeed the biggest katsu I've ever laid my eyes on!! It wasn't just for show either, that thing was tasty!! I proceeded to devour the entire thing heheh. I also ordered two sides of rice (instead of salad,) being the rice bucket that I am. They layer the katsu on top of fried glass noodles, which I thought was really neat ~ edible decorations rule!!

Overall, I was pretty impressed with the food at Sushi Nanaimo, especially for the price!! Sushi Nanaimo has VALUE written all over it. The king katsu I ordered was only $7.95!! I knoww, hard to believe right? I definitely prefer Sushi Nanaimo over Sushi Garden. This place gets really busy though, even on weekdays!! No surprise here ~ us Vancouverites love our cheap sushi!!

King Chicken Katsu $7.95

4/5 stars

So YUMS!! The exterior was perfectly crispy and super crunchy!! It was coated with a generous layer of tonkatsu sauce and mayo, which added a lot flavour!! The meat wasn't oily either, which I really appreciated. The rice was great paired with the katsu, and it wasn't too dry or wet!

Chopped Scallop Roll $3.50
3.5/5 stars

Woww, I seriously can't remember the last time I ate a chopped scallop roll. I don't eat them very often. But I really should ~

This one was pretty decent! This was loaded with a ton of scallop! It tasted pretty fresh and there wasn't too much mayo. The rice was semi flavourful and pretty moist.

Prawn & Yam Tempura (8 pieces)

4/5 stars

This was great as well!! This came with large, generous pieces of thick cut yam and juicy prawns!! The batter light, fluffy, and delicate. It wasn't overly oily either!! The tempura sauce was flavourful and paired well with the yam. The prawn had a nice snap and tasted great!

Always a packed house!

  1. "Channeling my inner Raymond"... LOL! You understand my ordering habits too well!

That's a huge, delicious-looking Chicken Katsu by the way. I'd probably have trouble eating anything after finishing the King Chicken Katsu, the two orders of rice, and the Scallop Roll. I'll need to learn from you one day. ;D

    1. It was pretty thin haha, but still really enjoyable nonetheless!! The pork tonkatsu might be thicker though, because it's cutlet style!! :D

  5. That's why I don't have daily sushi adventures! And too bad I'm usually uninterested with the combos, as I like special rolls, seared nigiri, creative appetizers, etc., which makes the bills even higher LOL
