So my phone broke...my camera just broke a few weeks ago! What's next, my computer?
My phone just randomly stopped charging...and it's not my charger. I tried a couple of different chargers...to no avail. Oh well. In the meantime, I've been using my mom's phone. I think I'm just going to wait until the new iphone comes out! :D
Anyways, I have no idea why it took me this long to try Ramen Jinya!! I guess the fact that there was always a lineup outside deterred me. But to my surprise, I didn't even have to wait in line, because they always have spots open for solo diners (hooray!)
On my third visit, I brought along my mom! My mom is a self proclaimed ramen hater (yes, you heard that right!) Leave it to my mom to hate ramen. Of all things! How on earth can someone hate ramen?! And yes, she's tried Santouka. If Santouka can't convert her, nothing will!
She thought that Jinya was "nice." Nice as in, "eh, I'll try it once, but it's not something I'll come back for."
Jinya reminds me of Ippudo Ramen (a chain from Japan.) The Ippudo in Taipei really impressed me...oh how I miss thee, Ippudo! Read my review of Ippudo here: http://www.vancitynoms.com/2015/02/taipei-day-101112-ippudo-ramen-wheel.html
I've tried most of the ramen joints in Van, but the ones I have yet to cross off my list are: the Ramenman, Menya Noodle, Hakkaku Ramen, Aji-Kura and the newly opened Koyuki Sapporo Ramen!
Tonkatsu Black (their signature!) $12.95
On my first visit, I tried their tonkatsu black!! For some reason, I was expecting the garlic flavour to be stronger, given the addition of black garlic oil. The garlic flavour was there, but it wasn't all that potent. It didn't even leave a garlicky aftertaste! The noodles were thin and cooked al dente, and the broth was silky and brimming with tonkatsu-esque flavours. The char siu pieces were quite small, this bowl definitely calls for the addition of extra char siu! I don't know, it was good...but it didn't wow me...hmmm.
My second time trying their Tonkatsu Black! :D
Tonkatsu Red Ramen (Level 5) $12.95
My mom wanted something spicy, so she opted for the red ramen! You can choose the spice level, and she went with 5! She thought that it was adequately spicy, but nothing compared to korean ramen. She was pleased with the semi-runny egg, and ordered a second helping of noodles!
Premium Tonkatsu White $11.75
I was expecting the Premium Tonkatsu White to be a different bowl of noodles entirely, but it turned out to be exactly the same as the Tonkatsu Black, sans the black garlic oil! Which I was totally fine with :D Without the addition of black garlic oil, the flavours of the tonkatsu really shine through!
Pork Soboro (Spicy Ground Pork) $1.50
I added their pork soboro as a topping for an additional $1.50. It wasn't spicy at all, but I didn't mind. The pork was savoury and a nice addition to the bowl! Was it worth the $1.50? Imo, no, but it was still pretty tasty!
My mom's extra helping of noodles! Her Tonkatsu Red Ramen came with thick, curly noodles!
KAEDAMA please! :D
4 Piece Gyozas $4.75
The gyozas here are pretty decent!! I like how they come in different sizes: 4 pieces, 8 pieces, and 12 pieces!! They're filled with chive/pork and the filling is always juicy! The dipping sauce adds a lot of flavour!
They had a promotion going for "3 gyozas for $2.30" which is a lot cheaper than their usual "4 gyozas for $4.75!"
Unsweetened Iced Green Tea $0.50
With any order, you can make it a combo by adding a drink for a mere 50 cents more!! The iced green tea is really high quality! I'm pretty sure they use some kind of concentrated matcha powder, because the tea is super potent (albeit rather bitter tasting!) You can also get this sweetened!
