Hi Genki - 4th Visit!

I have a midterm at 9:30 am tomorrow so I've pretty much been studying all day (Yea I really shouldn't be blogging right now, jkjk.) SOMEONE SAVE ME. I can't wait till I graduate...

We go to Hi Genki so often now! My dad and I are pretty much: obsessed. It's one of the few things we can agree on - food wise (we have very different tastes.) He discovered Hi Genki 20 years ago and he's been hooked ever since!! It's one of our ol' standbys. I wouldn't be surprised if he chose Nikkei Home as his retirement home!

One thing that I noticed about Hi Genki is: if you order the grilled fish dishes, it's actually cheaper than making it at home!! My mom bought 3 pieces of wild salmon at Safeway the other day - and it cost her $15!! The wild salmon shio/salmon kama at Hi Genki is only $9.95 - and it comes with 5 pieces!! When I told my mom she was like "Wow, I'm never buying salmon at Safeway again."

OH, and Raymond, you should totally review this place, even though it doesn't technically classify as a "sushi" restaurant ~ they have sashimi!! ;)

I like fish. Can you tell?

Salmon Kama - 5 pieces $9.95

4.5/5 stars

This is probably my favourite dish at Hi Genki!! I literally order this everytime I go now!! I've probably eaten it 5-7 times now hehe.

The salmon is superb!! It's always deliciously silky, smooth and flavourful!! The way they grill it renders the skin nice and crispy! My favourite part is the salmon belly, it literally melts in your mouth!

Mixed Grill

4/5 stars

My dad had a mixed grill, and he really enjoyed it!! It came with one piece of mackerel, sardine, and salmon! The fish was tender and moist, however, the sardine was a bit burnt. He finished all of the salad, which was dressed in a light, tangy sauce!

Chicken Katsu Curry
3.5/5 stars

My dad wasn't in the mood for fish that day, so he opted for curry! This dish came with generous cuts of chicken katsu! The exterior was crispy and the inside was nice and moist. It wasn't anything special, but well executed nonetheless!! The curry tasted like your typical glico curry; sweet and subtly spicy!

Wild Salmon Shio - 5 pieces $9.95

4.5/5 stars

This was SUCH a good deal!! 3 pieces of wild salmon cost $15 at Safeway, and this only cost $9.95!! It tasted just as good (if not better) than the salmon kama!! The fish was super tender and juicy!! No complaints!

Salmon Bone $7.95
Omg...this thing was MASSIVE.

3.5/5 stars

Wow, if you're looking to feed 3+ people for under $8, this is it!! The picture doesn't do the size justice. There were so many pieces, we lost count. Even though it's named "Salmon Bone" there was a ton of meat!! The salmon was moist, and not dry at all!! The only seasoning is the soy sauce, but we enjoyed how simple it was!

The Daily Specials on the days that we went!

  1. Oh I've been here before. It was during this time when I was at the tail end of a cold and wasn't feeling well enough to have sushi. Yes, I do agree that the food is decent... actually more than decent. <-- That's gonna be my full review for now!

And did you and your dad just finish 5 dishes in one meal?! I was full after one dish...

    2. Lol I'm going to have to find a place to post it. After all, each one of Raymond's Sushi Adventures must involve at least one item that legitimately counts as sushi.

And "I don't eat that much"... are you sure Selina?!

  2. I haven't been there for at least 4-5 years. Food is good, but the place didn't have great ventilation (that I recall) and I came out smelling like the kitchen's deep-frying. But nice to eat alongside other customers as well as the resident seniors of Nikkei Home.

    1. haha that's funny, I've never noticed a smell on my clothes!! Maybe they've improved their ventilation!

Yea it's always fun getting to eat alongside the residents!! My dad was talking to an old Cantonese lady, and he found out that she was 100 years old!!

  3. If you guys like katsu (and katsu curry), you might want to try Clubhouse Sushi in Olympic Vilage. Clubhouse pre-dated Oly Village for many years so they're not some trendy-wanna-be in the 'hood. Massive katsu surrounded by a pool of curry sauce so big you can almost swim in it :-)
